THE HISTORY

We are Berlera

In the plain between Arco and Riva del Garda stands the hill of St. Bartholomew. Here is the restaurant "The Berlera", a unique place, witness to a history that began already in the Bronze Age

In 1925 they were in fact found many artifacts dating back to 1800-1600 BC: vases, handles, spear points, bone and antler working, now preserved in the Municipal Museum, which suggests that the hill was the site of a proto-historic fort. Around the back were also settled by the Romans who began the mining of sandstone, work continued for centuries, which were constructed buildings and works of artistic merit. The Middle Ages brings news of a "castrum ceule quod inter east Arcum et ripam", ie a castle that was in Cole, between Arco and Riva.

The Middle Ages brings news of a "castrum ceule quod inter east Arcum et ripam", ie a castle that was in Cole, between Arco and Riva. A document dated 1482 mentions a church in "the territory Ripae, super Sancti Bartolomei back." On the hill there was indeed a church dedicated to the holy apostle and martyr, near which were kept in quarantine those who came from places plague or had had contact with infected persons.

In 1703, at the time of the invasion of French troops commanded by General Vendôme, the church was still intact, as is depicted in the famous painting, now in the Castle of Good Counsel of Trent, which illustrates the departure of the French from Sarca. The construction works of the Austrian fortifications during World War I, unfortunately, led to his downfall. The trenches and the battlements of the war are still visible along the entire perimeter of the hill. Regarding the building adhered to the hill, the ground floor houses the restaurant, it recovers track already in legal documents of 1700. The rise was affected by the excavation of rock for a long time and the building incorporates in its structure the remains of ancient quarries.

The building and the hill of St. Bartholomew are unique inimitable, in which man and nature seem to find a peaceful coexistence and mutual protection. The Bonora family acquired and restored the building and bring it to current status and opened the restaurant "The Berlera". Opened in 1972, has retained the name by which from time immemorial has been identified throughout the property. It arises from the presence of numerous trees of Celtis Australis, the family of Ulmacee, locally called berlera for drupes, like so many pearls, which the plant produces. The restaurant is in a charming room, vestiges of the ancient quarries, where the marks left by the stonecutters testify to centuries of work and atavistic steps.

From the large outdoor courtyard, the shade of berlere, your gaze is lost in the vineyards and olive trees, up to the blue of Lake Garda. The new management by Andrea and Lizet Guglielmi aims to enhance the features typical food of the area, adding to the splendid visual the dimension of taste.
